Qacha's Nek
Geography and history
Qacha’s Nek is the capital area of the Qacha’s Nek region in Lesotho. This gateway is the only practical entrance from South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. The area is named after the well-known thief Chief Moorosi’s son, Qacha and the area was therefore also seen as an outlaw centre. A paved airstrip is available for charters who would like to visit the highlands. .It has an area of 2,349 km² and a population in 2006 of approximately 71,876.
Qacha’s Nek is known for its heavily forested areas where the giant California Redwood trees grow. These trees can easily exceed 25 m in height and are approximately 50 years old.
