Mohale's Hoek
Geography and history
Mohale’s Hoek is the capital town of the Mohale’s Hoek region of Lesotho. This town located 125 km from Maseru, Lesotho’s capital city. Mohale’s Hoek was named after Moshoeshoe the Great’s half brother who was the first chief of the district. This district provides a very scenic corridor for motorists en route between Maseru and Quthing District. This is a bustling town with well-stocked shops. Whether you’re heading north or south, this is a good place to replenish your supplies.
This area had first been inhabited by the San, but then the Baphuti took over this land in 1795. Mohale’s Hoek is the second oldest town of all the capitals of the regions in Lesotho. This town was unfortunately completely destroyed during the Gun War in 1880. The total population of this town stands at about 25 000 residents.
