General Information

Mafeteng is the capital town of the Mafeteng region of Lesotho. The name of this town is Sesotho and it means “Lefeta’s place”. Lefeta, meaning “traveller”, was the nickname of a well-known magistrate who worked in the area a long time ago. Mafeteng has since grown into a busy trading centre that once served as an important staging post during the war.

Mafeteng is located 76 km from Maseru, Lesotho’s capital city.  The Gun War of 1880 was fought near this town and the cemetery contains a monument in the form of an obelisk to commemorate the soldiers who fought in this war. Mafeteng has a large population total of about 60 000 residents.
