General Information

Hlotse is the capital town of the Leribe region of Lesotho. It is located near the Hlotse River and the South African border. The town is named after the nearby river and situated 94 km on the A1 road from the capital of Lesotho, Maseru. Hlotse was founded in 1876 by a British missionary, Reverend John Widdicombe, and served as an important link in the 1880 Gun War.

Hlotse is also referred to as Leribe because of the fact that it is the capital town. The name Leribe comes from the adjacent French Protestant Leribe Mission that was founded by Francois Coillard in 1859. Hlotse has a total population of about 25 000 inhabitants.
