Katse is the highest dam in Africa, is also one of the world’s ten largest concrete arch dams in terms of volume, with a capacity of nearly 2 billion cubic metres and a surface area of 38.5 square kilometres. The dam is built in the Lesotho Maluti Mountains and is at the centre of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The dam provides in the region of 72 megawatts of electricity for Lesotho and earns millions in revenue for supplying South Africa with water.
The flora surrounding the dam is of photographic beauty while bird life abounds and the winter months find the surrounds sprinkled with snow. Tours are offered of the dam wall where visitors can stand in fascination at Man's great achievement - the project continues with new phases.
