Mokhotlong
Geography and history
Mokhotlong is a town situated in the Mokhotlong region of Lesotho. The name of this town means “Place of the Bald Ibis” and this is one of the remotest towns in the country. This town is located 114 km from Oxbow and tourists need to make sure that they have enough fuel for the journey. Mokhotlong is rich in montane birdlife which creates a frontier atmosphere.
Lets'eng la Terae
Situated in the Maloti Mountains, Lets'eng la Terae has an average elevation of 3,200m above sea level, making it the highest diamond mine in the world. Lets'eng produces diamonds which are reputed to sell for highest per carat price of any kimberline mine
The road in this town has many twists and turns and peaks at the highest point, the Tlaeeng Pass. This 3 275 m pass makes this road the highest in the African continent and is sometimes referred to as “The Roof of Africa”.
